ABOUT US

NPO EDGE (Japan Dyslexia Society) is a Certified Non-Profit Organization registered in Tokyo.
Established in October 2001, registered as Certified NPO by Tokyo Metropolitan Government as of September 2017
Chairperson: Eiko Todo
Office: Minato

EDGE stands for:

Hoping that people on the edge will have the edge over others

  • E=Extraordinary (it is great to be different)
  • D=Dyslexic (obviously we have difficulties in reading and writing)
  • G=Gifted (Everybody is born with a gift and it is our duty to let every single human being flourish their gift)
  • E=Eclectic (Meaning selective: the incidence of having dyslexia is approximately 10% in any language, race or nationality. The fact that we exist we have a role to play in the society)

The word EDGE has several meanings and people with dyslexia has all:

  • the outer or furthest point of something:
  • a point beyond which something unpleasant or very noticeable is likely to happen:
  • an advantage over other people

Words from the Chairperson: “Dyslexia is Okay!”

EDGE’s strength lies in its pioneering, unique, and personalized approach. Previously unknown in Japan, “Dyslexia” has been positioned as a medical classification. We have been involved in the enactment of various laws such as the Developmental Disabilities Support Law and the Law for the Elimination of Discrimination against Persons with Disabilities, support measures, educational policies, and more.

The impetus for the establishment of the NPO came from my son, who studied in the UK. He said, “The assessment and support I received in the UK opened up my future, so I want people in Japan to do something about it.” The main pillars of our activities have been to first make people aware that there are people with dyslexia, to empower them through activities such as assessment and friendship building, and to help them realize their true strengths. We also aim to develop human resources and create a network of related organizations to support those who can.  Eike Todo, Chairperson, NPO EDGE (Japan Dyslexia Society)

Donation

Please support NPO EDGE and people with dyslexia. We appreciate for your support.

Among learning disabilities (LD), which make up a significant portion of developmental disabilities, those with specific difficulties in reading and writing account for about 8% of the population. Approximately 35 to 60% of children with LD experience truancy. Many are deprived of opportunities for learning and social participation and are unable to reach their full potential. Therefore, we at EDGE are working to raise awareness, empower them, train supporters, and create a network. Donations are a major source of support to maintain and continue these activities.
